FG Gives Pantami, NCC N1.8bn to Monitor and Block SIM Cards Used for Dubious Calls and Frauds -Endabwediblog

The system will help the regulatory agency to block SIM cards engaging in dubious or fraudulent calls and activities from anyplace in the world Nigeria is ramping up the fight against fraudsters who use telephone and SIM cards to dupe the  unsuspecting public.

The government has supported funds for the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to track dubious calls made with the plan to defraud users.

Minister of Communications, Isa Ali Pantami, said the deployment is to fight what is called voice traffic termination fraud.

Nigeria's Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N1.8 billion for the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and NCC to deploy regulatory system in the Nigerian Telecoms industry to tackle criminal act in the country.

What is SIM box The Digital Economy minister stated that the new system will help the NCC to monitor, detect and block SIM box traffic, an interconnect bypass base on international calling. Basically, since call costs from outside the nation are higher than expenses of calls in the country, dubious people are using unapproved ways to direct international calls via VOIP and circumvent connecting charges from abroad, according to a GMS article. Pantami said this will likewise be use to fight SIM box traffic used for suspecting things.

The minister said the system would end voice traffic, stopping Fraud on its track and generating revenue for the government, refering to that the use of international number would consistently draw in higher tax. 

Fight  against voice traffic and termination The initial memo which is endorsed by the FEC for deployment of equipment used in guideline in the telecoms sector is to be done by the NCC.

"The system has two components; number one is the deployment of a regulatory system to monitor, detect and block SIM box traffic. It will be implemented at the cost of N804.12 million by the NCC.

"This deployment is to fight what is called voice traffic termination fraud. The system will support our country in two major ways of addressing to challengies of insecurities.

"Sometimes, you will get a call with a local number that is (dubiously) set up as an international number; and sometimes a call can come in however the number won't show.

"Most occasions, you will get a call with a cloned number so you really want to investigate further to know who really made the call." According to Pantami using this multitude of system, a regulatory agency like NCC can immediately address such criminal propensities for the Nigerian government. Over N1trn income produced in 2 years achievement, the federal ministry of communication and digital economy under Isa Pantami generated N1.054 trillion as revenue for the government in two years. 

This was disclosed  by Pantami, minister of communication and digital economy in Abuja.

According to him, the digital economy sector played a huge role in lifting the nation out of recession, with ICT recording the highest growth rate in the fourth quarter of 2020
